es geht den menschen wie den tieren

observing the mid-winter growth of my potplants, i was delighted to see that the hibiscus is in bloom again. which never happened before during this time of year simply because our flat is a bit colder than average. so i'm rather delighted that the plant surprised me with an open blossom this morning.

edit: and thus, silliness ensued... ;-)

stolen from charmingquark's blog.

listed below are the top 100 books of some 250.000 watchers of ZDF (channel 2 in germany). bolded are the ones i read. (in brackets are, as usual, my redundant comments.)

are they?

birgit and major. what have you done to me? this starsky and hutch fandom is lethal -- a complete wackjob. i tell ya!!! though, i have to admit, i was already into the show some 17 years ago when it was still aired on german telly. proud member of team starsky then. proud member of team starsky now! hey, i gotta stick to my beuteschema... (and, no!, that's not dubya on the right, but roland totheroh!!!)

browsing the web today, i found an insane trivia page listing all the strangest occurances on the show. like 'starsky touches hutch', 'hutch touches starsky', 'they touch each other' and 'other body contact'. not to speak of the categories 'body count', 'what time is it?' or 'booze', 'drugs' and 'literacy'. honestly! and i thought i had too much spare time in my spare time. see for yourselves.

where did that come from?

after six years of studying english literature, i still can't remember shakespeare's birthdate. but somehow, somewhere in the past 29 years, i have picked up that grover cleveland was the only ever non-consecutive POTUS -- which i suddenly remembered on watching the latest episode of QI as soon as stephen fry asked how many people had taken the presidential oath.

if you can't depend on anything, you can still depend on two things: godwin's law and the ignorance of people.

blame it on a lazy saturday

before i return to watching starsky & hutch, i just wanted to share the latest meme with you:

SUPPOSEDLY if you’ve seen over 70 films, you have no life. Mark the ones you’ve seen. There are 239 films on this list. Copy this list and paste this on your Journal. Then, put x’s next to the films you’ve seen, add them up, change the header adding your number, and click post at the bottom. Have fun.

shoefiti in winter

shoetossing doesn't stop. not for the die-hards. not even in winter. not in adverse conditions, like snow. so here's the latest sighting of shoefiti in leipzig.

sorry for the lack of colour. it's winter, as i would like to have you know.

why?

i have finally started outlining my thesis. most of you are probably now asking, 'what the hell has she been doing the past year?' well, it's easily explained. although i have all these crazy and wild ideas flying through my head, i hate pinning them down. i hate being nailed onto the concrete word. i don't want to be pinned down. of course, resistance is futile. who ever was awarded a title for being silly? (apart from chaplin! but he was a genius in his own field. i'm not even going there.)

so. outline. because, lets face it, if i don't start conquering my demons pretty soon, there's hell to pay. probably even quite literally.

the dancing crows

every winter, the crows are gathering in this city in order to survive the cold season. the colder it gets, the bigger the swarms. one of the great side effects of this phenomenon are the dancing swarms every evening. single flocks gather together every evening to create one big swarm before they settle down for the night in the trees around. but see for yourselfves below.

the poladroid treatment

here's a lovely toy to play around with on rainy or snowy days. (in other words: it's perfect for the next week or two!) it's a virtual polaroid camera tool invented by the crafty devils over at the Poladroid project site. it's a fun little gadget to pimp your holiday pictures that need just a little touch of off-colour.

my year 2009 in videos

instead of just counting off the different stations of my life in the past 365 days, let me just show you, what i did on the occassion. spanning from one new year's eve to another, it seems like most of my activities have been taped either by night or underground with an equal lack of proper light.

have a great evening filled with fun, friends, music and laughter! but also make sure that you all get home savely. after all, i want to see you all again next year!

ps. images taken from the gold rush (1925) and stiched together by ce moi.

pps. and whatever every media outlet is saying, decades have never lasted 9 years! we still have one more year to go for the first decade of this century. one more year to mess up or make good. let's pray for the latter one!

charlie songs

in the 1910s, the chaplin-mania took off like a rocket. firmly and steadily, his fame soared to the sky. and strongly ignoring all sorts of copy-right and cashing in on the phenomenon, there were numerous songs composed in honour of the little fellow with the baggy pants. so, here are some examples of period adoration of a global phenomenon. harry potter had nothing on the tramp!

attempts at translations

one year ago, by complete coincidence, stephen weissman left a comment on one of my entries. that's how we came into contact. since then we have been mailing each other sporadically and i had offered my help to translate some of the german reviews for him.

some three weeks ago, the german translation of steve's chaplin: a life was released for the german readership. (in german: Chaplin: Eine Biographie). ilja richter wrote a somewhat unusual review for Die Berliner Morgenpost as he was very much taken in by the book.
