20 years later

monday just after i had finished teaching the second round of shakespeare's lusty world of sonnets, i was on my way to berlin to celebrate 20 years of the opening of the iron curtain together with birgit and christoph. at first it was wet. and then there were lots of people. and then we had a hunch that the people in front of their tellies saw much much much more and also heard what was being said. but still it was great fun! it's not every day that a nation gets to celebrate its freedom and invite the whole world to the party.

and then, shortly after midnight, christoph found himself in the arms of two obliging ladies who wished him a happy birthday.

before you continue with the content behind the cut, please, take the time to re-watch the original broadcast of the tagesschau with a very happy anchorman announcing the opening of the east-german borders.

this is what the tagesschau had to sa a day after the great event. note that the anchorman from the previous day doesn't even try holding back his glee this time around:

and for laughs, enjoy one french tourist getting a bit carried away with all the excitement:

I thought of you on this day, even if I was away from LJ. SubHub and I talked about how we never thought we'd live to see the day the wall would come down. Cheers!

i am very certain you would have enjoyed the festivities immensely. it was such an enchanted day. berlin usually is a very harsh and rough city. but not that day. everybody was smiling and having a generally good time. people were dancing in the streets -- despite the rain!

That was a wonderful evening, and even the rain didn't bother me.
I am glad I could relive the moment - which I was able to follow only via the radio the first time round, because I was living in Hannover by then.
