celebrity pic spam meme

gray from over at livejournal started it. and i am the willing copy-cat. naturally this post is about chaplin and, most definitely, it's anything but dial-up friendly.

i thought, i'd add another layer to the picspam. so, in addition to posting the according pictures of chaplin dressed in his civies, there will be one additional picture of him in costume. there's just no way to seperate the man from his creation.

1. Choose a picture of the funniest face on this person.

chaplin was a nut with a strange sense of humour. but that's why i like him. the second picture is from a little home movie that was shot in the set of the circus when the prince of wales popped round for a visit.

2. Post a picture of your person eating.

given his childhood, the man was obsessed with food. in pretty much all his films, there's at least one scene of him eating. strange that you hardly see this when he's out of costume. so the civi-pic is actually him in a mocumentary called how to make pictures where he plays himself.

3. Choose a picture of your person with an animal.

that one was very easy. in the studio he was pretty much constantly surrounded by the studio dogs. in the first picture he looks about twelve years old, but he was in his late twenties already! for a costume-picture, i could have easily gone for the circus of course. but that would have been too easy. so i chose a publicity shot from a dog's life instead.

4. Choose a picture of your person with a member of the opposite sex.

i mean, come on! when was he ever not surrounded by women?!? in the first picture he is accompanied by gloria swanson and marion davies. in the second picture, a publicity shot for the adventurer, he wears the same goofy grin while hanging onto cute, darling edna purviance. what is also very interesting, taking his size into consideration, he always managed to find a girl that was still shorter than he was. even when she was wearing heels!

5. Choose a picture where you would have sex with this person.

what's interesting in that respect is that civi-charlie was quite a dish and filled with a libido that was in danger of leaking from his ears, he had so much of it. on the other side, there's the tramp who is a very asexual figure. the little fellow is in love with falling in love. but it stops there. you see him kissing the girl, but you always get the impression that this is something like eating a bonbon and not forplay to something more raunchy. so yeah, what i'm getting at, i totally wouldn't hit on the tramp, but sometimes he appears still good looking, despite the 'stache. the still is taken from the vagabond where he looks almost his real age (27 or 28 years old) and his real self, even though he's wearing this heavy stage make-up.

6. Choose a picture of your favorite outfit on this person.

he was fab in fancy clothes! that's why i also opted for a promo-shot for monsieur verdoux.

7. Choose a picture of your person smiling.

this one was difficult. there are tons of pictures of him grinning from ear to ear, but just a regular, not over-the-top smile is rare. i bet this comes from his cultivation of the fake prop-grin which he had handy every time a camera was shoved in his face. the first picture is from a home movie called camille made by ralph barton. the second one was taken on the set of the gold rush and it shows him demonstrating the part of jack to the cast. (please note the actress on the right. she's a charming girl who played in a total of three of chaplin's films and then some. it's such a shame that she died at a very young age. i would have loved to see her in more productions!)

8. Choose a picture of your person half naked.

oh, dear. chaplin was a stringy little fellow with a large head. that's what years of malnourishment during childhood do for you. not as toned as buster keaton (who was astonishingly buff!), but that's what gave him his graceful movements. griffith didn't call him 'a fucking dancer' for no reason.

9. Choose a picture of your person doing an outdoor activity.
piece of cake. when was ever ever not active? the first picture features out-door acrobatics whilst on the liberty loan tour with douglass faibanks, who's holding him up here, and mary pickford during WWI. the second one was taken on the set of the kid and features flying lessons -- which almost killed him when he smashed face first onto the concrete underneath...

10. Choose your favorite picture of this person.
civi-pic shows chaplin wearing a tux. need i say more. also, both pictures i used as bases for wallpapers. so in order not to get put out by them even after quite a long time, i must like them very much in the first place. there's nothing like ruining perfectly good pictures for yourself by seeing them too often. i could never tire of these two, though.

now, on to more serious things ... like preparing my next lessons. ::cough::

Eee, these are so great! Love the smiling picture from The Gold Rush. And man, he really does look twelve years old in that picture with the dog. o_O

>>so yeah, what i'm getting at, i totally wouldn't hit on the tramp, but sometimes he appears still good looking, despite the 'stache.

Heh. I don't know if this is my asexuality showing or what, but oddly enough, I have zero attraction to the real Charlie Chaplin, yet I think the Tramp is just beautiful, mustache and all. :-D And hey, I like his tiny stringy figure!

And that last picture! I don't even know how I've managed to not see that one before, because it looks like the kind of promo shot that would be everywhere, but anyway I am certainly right-click saving it now. :-D

-- be my guest. in case you're in need of more pictures, just say the word. there's more where these came from. :-D

also, i find the tramp is just cuteness in a bag. he's adorable and cute and goofy and just such a wonderfully human creature. but i'm just not into facial hair.

What an interesting picspam! I never thought about Chaplin being attractive but, after have seen all the pictures you post, I have to admit that he was handsome (uhm, picture 5, uff) and damn! what a nice surprise the pictures of muscled Keaton...
#2 eldivinomarques on 2009-12-05 14:03 (Reply)
woah! LJ-celebrity on my humble blog. i am flatterd!!! :-) ::waves::

chaplin was a very pretty boy, indeed. i had some real trouble choosing between pictures, actually. it was a bit like the infernal choice between chocolate and ice cream.

did you notice how they named that first picture of buster? busterkeatonbeefcake. erm. yeah. sums this up pretty well, i guess. :-D
#2.1 rita on 2009-12-05 14:10 (Reply)
blushes oh, please. Just another LJ-user. I know that I'm not very active but it doesn't mean that I do not read the posts of the people I have friended.

Yes, now I know that, behind the well-known outift, there was a very nice man. Oh, I bet it was difficult to choose just a few pics. If I would do a post of this kind (that after saw yours, I'm quite tempted to do)it would be pretty hard to select and post just a few pics of Fred Astaire. Aw, vintage men...

Yes, haha, I noticed it and well, it suits it perfectly. Such a nice body.
#3 eldivinomarques on 2009-12-05 14:22 (Reply)
::sigh::

why don't they make them like that anymore?!? vintage men, i mean. why oh why did style go out of fashion?

i would certainly like to see your take on a post about fred astaire. he's another one of those gems who go totally unnoticed these days. plus: he was a dancer, too. :-)

::sigh again::
#3.1 rita on 2009-12-05 14:26 (Reply)
Exactly, why don't they make these kind of men anylonger? Since I started to like Astaire and 30's 40's style, I miss, as you, that fashion. No more men wearing hats, no more elegant suits, just hip-hopers and all those tribes.

Oh, then I'll try to make a post later and I'll post a link to yours because the gorgeous photos you posted worth it.

and yes, let me :sigh: too

good thing there's at least dita von teese who is upholding a sense of style and grace. all hail to her! now, if there were just a couple of men who'd get some inspiration from her and started dressing accordingly. i've also begun to change my wardrobe very slowly to have a certain 30s or 40s touch. though i have to do it very slowly, or else i'd be broke before christmas. :-D

ooooooh. eyecandy astaire. i am very much looking forward to it!!! and thank you very much indeed for cross linking. the chaplin needs more love than he usually receives these days. :-D
#3.1.1.1 rita on 2009-12-05 14:38 (Reply)
Aw, Dita Von Teese is simply gorgeous, stunning... and I could go on. Oh, but there are men that like old style, few but there are places like: http://www.thefedoralounge.com where you can find people talking about vintage. take a look at it, perhaps you will like it.
Oh, I want to change my wardrobe aswell and give it a nice oldfashion touch.

Your welcome. Anything to help another fantastic actor to get the love he deserves. :-D

this is a fantastic page! thanks for the link. i'll most certainly dive into the comment boards. they're ded helpful, especially on the little things.

a couple of months ago, for example, i varnished my nails in the typical 30s fashion that spares out the bottom part of your nail which makes it look like a half moon. and everyone asked me whether i had my nails grown out and never bothered to take of the varnish. anyway. what i'm getting at: most people think your nuts for wearing the vintage look but are completely oblivious to their hideous 80s get-up. ::eyeroll::
#3.1.1.1.1.1 rita on 2009-12-05 15:16 (Reply)
See? That's something I always hated. People thinking you are weird because you like and wear different stuff than they do but they won't notice that what they were is atrocious. Exactly! Now we have to suffer that horrible come back of 80's mixed with some 70's and not good taste at all but! no, you will always be the one that dressed odd. :sighs* You know? Let's just wear what we want, let's enjoy our gorgeous vintage men and let's them keep all that tv's ads, movies, paper, tell them to wear. let's just be happy. ;-)

high five! you know, it feels good not to be a victim of marketing strategies and consumer culture. it feels nice to carve out a little niche somewhere in the sub culture. who wants to look like everybody anyway, eh?
#3.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 rita on 2009-12-05 15:52 (Reply)
Exactly. I like to know that we are doing what we like and that we are not part of the mainstream. vive la différence!

And I finish the picspam (at last) I never thought it could take so long, uff.
#3.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 eldivinomarques on 2009-12-05 18:10 (Reply)

and what does your picspam look like? ;-)

ps. are there guys from leipzig on there who are willing to emigrate? if not, then it wouldn't be of much help to me. :-)

good to see you, cate. and thank you for the comment. charlie normally doesn't get the love he deserves, so i am always happy to see another chaplinist out there making her rounds. :-)
#5.1 rita on 2009-12-06 09:48 (Reply)
Strange, it never occurred to me that Chaplin's stature (large head with narrow shoulders and a generally petite body) was due to his malnourishment as a child (I wonder if my husband was malnourished as he also has narrow shoulders and a huge head).Chaplin's childhood was a tragedy, but honestly he wouldn't have been as physically funny and endearing with a more macho physique. He was such a darling Peter Pan type. :-)
eldivinomarques...calling Chaplin a "very nice man" is interesting. I don't know if I would ever call him that considering all the stuff I've read about getting minors pregnant and what not. I still love his work and personae, but Charles Chaplin lead a rocky life until he married Oona.
#6 lilsurelybeans (Link) on 2009-12-08 11:01 (Reply)
i am sure she meant nice in the meaning of 'good looking'. and there's no doubt about that . he was a dish. and not to make any excuses about his behaviour for most of his life, i think we also need to take into consideration that a) times then were a heck of a lot different than today, b) he had a major youth complex thanks to having experienced his mothers failing health first hand, c) he grew up in theatre surroundings, whose absence of most middle-class morals would even make us blush to our roots -- even after the sexual revolution. and d) when you put all these together, it's a wonder that he actually managed to land in jail by the age of 16.

as i said. these are no excuses, especially when you look at the rotten way he treated edna and lita (though, the latter wasn't quite as innocent as she always claimed). and world fame and nobody daring to say, 'no!' to his face for a progressive amount of years didn't help matters either. but i think, we shouldn't judge these circumstances, but should try to understand them. though, i will never be able to grasp the whole lita-story...
#6.1 rita on 2009-12-08 13:42 (Reply)
I wanted to say that he was a nice looking man but I thought that just saying 'nice' it was obvious. And yeah, I read about that him and minors too so I wasn't refering to his personality.
