elementary sherlocking: 'the illustrious client' (1924)

apologies for the delayed commencement of the discussion of the case-book of sherlock holmes. but after my return from london, i had been sick as a dog for an entire week -- and could have probably passed muster in a famous re-enactment of 'the dying detective' if push had come to shove. this week then, without further ado, brings the first story from the final collection of holmes-stories and a first faint light at the end of the tunnel of 60 reviews.

london lurgy

i've been back from london now for about a week and am beginning to emerge from a fever and drug-induced delirium. as always when i've spent  more than just a day in the city, i've returned sick as the proverbial dog. i can't remember when i've last been sick to such a degree. it must have been at least some 10 or more years ago. but my amazing special powers of producing unimaginable amounts of mucus were simply magnificent. within four days, i had gone through a whole pack of paper tissues. that's 100 in just four days. by day five my nose felt like sandpaper and was ready to poart company with my face. now, a week later, i still sound like a hoarse banshee. to make a long story short: photos from london had been a while in the pipe and i now find the time and am in the right muse to share them.

chilly leipzig

after one week of siberian weather fronts, germany is still in deep-freeze. though not in the same state of lockdown as britain with its three crumples of snow. the following pictures were taken last weekend when i opened the curtains some time in the morning -- only to find one of my 1950s double framed windows frosted over. and even though the temperatures have risen now by some 15 °C, that window hasn't actually defrosted the entire past week. that's what good old wooden frames do for you. gosh, i wish i had double glazing!

in an ideal world, i'd get to place a call with a bbc studio, order a script to be assembled of the most awesome story from the four branches of the mabinogi and before the year is out, branwen daughter of llyr would no longer be a dream, but would hit the cinemas. this would be my personal dream cast.

elementary sherlocking: 'his last bow' (1917)

written towards the fag end of WWI, this last of holmes's cases, having been dragged out of his retirement in sussex as a bee farmer (i still think this is code speak!) like field marshall Blücher against napoleon, marks the beginning of parting with the detective. there is only one more collection of stories ahead -- that's another three months of reading and reviewing. and like the messrs holmes and watson are looking forward to retirement, i am looking forward to finishing this project of review madness. the parting will be bitter-sweet just like this last adventure in tieing up inept german spies.

eleven things meme -- minus the eleventh question

since this is supposed to be a writing day, i need to get in the mood of chucking out a couple of pages about welsh place names and the stories behind them for the next issue of the liaisons periodical. -- someone remind me: why again did i sign up for five articles? and since writing works best with getting some procrastination in the way, here's a meme.
