the joys of listening to independent local radio stations

the programme switched in the last hour from classical music to grind core, but not without forgetting to squeeze in german lady rap. i love this radio station! and right now they are elaborating on the etymology of 'fuck'. and it's not even 10 pm.

cabaret (1972)

after having stumbled across a blog on the topic a while back, i had started to watch a couple of films in b&w instead of their intended techinicolor in order to see whether the author was right and there are indeed a number of films that would have actually been better had they been intended as b&w films. one of these examples in case is cabaret (1972) by bob fosse. it's remarkable just how much better and much more dramatic it looks with the colour switched off. all of a sudden, the film is acquiring an almost documentary-style kind of look and also shows off the marvelous lighting used on the sets. it's absolutely mind-blowing. but see for yourselves.

elementary sherlocking: 'the three gables' (1926)

as of late, i've been running behind my self-imposed reading schedule once again and the head start is once more dropping away as i'm writing up these reviews. i'm only about a handful of stories short from having read through the entire canon. and currently that jane austen woman is keeping me busy with her most wondrous tale about the dashwood sisters. but once that novel is finished in a few days, i'll return to the holmesverse so that this project will see more than just the light at the end of the tunnel. so without further ado, let's have a look at that house with the three gables.

a voice of cream and honey -- and booze

find behind the cut a delightful interview that young master o'toole gave to the beeb in 1960 -- before he went off to the jordanian desert to ride his camel gladys for the next two years and emerge on the other side of that project covered in dust but world famous. he may have been only 28 years old at that point, but you can already hear his great talent with words which he proved much later in his two autobiographies. he's one of those guys who'd be able to read the phonebook of greater london, the only problem is, though, that you'd have a difficult time sitting through it because the voice is so soothing.

elementary sherlocking: 'the mazarin stone' (1921)

once more, tardiness reigns. this time it is all to do with my personal watson having moved out of the flat. my former flat-mate of eight years (though not biographer) has deserted me and relocated to her new abode last week. since then i have been ever so busy cleaning up my personal mess to make these rooms presentable to prospective new watsons. btw. i still take applications. but that's enough with that. let's turn to ACD plagiarizing himself this week.

elementary sherlocking: 'the blanched soldier' (1926)

please note the rather random and non-chronological order of the reviewed stories from this collection in the case-book. i am simply following in the order how they are printed in leslie s. klinger's new annotated. and with that, let's come to 'the blanched soldier', one of the last holmes stories ever written by ACD -- but which for some inexplicable reason is listed in second place in the case-book.

elementary sherlocking: 'the illustrious client' (1924)

apologies for the delayed commencement of the discussion of the case-book of sherlock holmes. but after my return from london, i had been sick as a dog for an entire week -- and could have probably passed muster in a famous re-enactment of 'the dying detective' if push had come to shove. this week then, without further ado, brings the first story from the final collection of holmes-stories and a first faint light at the end of the tunnel of 60 reviews.

branwen ferch llyr

in an ideal world, i'd get to place a call with a bbc studio, order a script to be assembled of the most awesome story from the four branches of the mabinogi and before the year is out, branwen daughter of llyr would no longer be a dream, but would hit the cinemas. this would be my personal dream cast.

elementary sherlocking: 'his last bow' (1917)

written towards the fag end of WWI, this last of holmes's cases, having been dragged out of his retirement in sussex as a bee farmer (i still think this is code speak!) like field marshall Blücher against napoleon, marks the beginning of parting with the detective. there is only one more collection of stories ahead -- that's another three months of reading and reviewing. and like the messrs holmes and watson are looking forward to retirement, i am looking forward to finishing this project of review madness. the parting will be bitter-sweet just like this last adventure in tieing up inept german spies.

elementary sherlocking: 'the devil's foot' (1910)

one of my personal favourites has finally come up for the review this week. 'the devil's foot' is one among those stories which i had read some three years ago during my first venture into holmesverse and it clicked with me completely. this is also one of the first episodes which i consciously remember having seen on telly way back in 2006 -- only by the time i read the story, i had entirely forgotten about the ending. what stuck with me, though, was seeing the length of that nearly symbiotic friendship between holmes and watson.

that awkward moment ...

... when you realize you cannot hunt for the elusive short film hills like white elephants anymore to show in literature class because after four years of unsuccessful searching you suddenly discover benedict cumberbatch's name on the bottom of the cast list. and because the moment you do manage to track down this piece of digital celluloid, you suddenly end up looking like one sad sack among a massive hoard of riddiculous fangirls. -- particularly since you've been looking for this film all over because your only motivation had been greg 'willoughby' wise!

three films

so, apparently the world is coming to an end in 2012. what better year than this to watch the following up-coming films to be released over the next couple of months? they're all set in the past -- but oddly seem to share a strange similarity: they are all connected with something that is about to perish.

elementary sherlocking: 'the disappearance of lady frances carfax' (1911)

the first week on the other side of sunday livestreams with SHERLOCK. gone is the adventure of feeling like cracking through the iron curtain in the 60s with a toothpick and an aluminium foil hat. so instead it's back to the regular pattern of the grAnada district and the slightly older versions of sherlock and john, namely holmes and watson.

elementary sherlocking: 'the dying detective' (1913)

perfectly timed for the week after sherlock's falling out with rich brook, this round of elementary sherlocking looks into the first incident (chronologically speaking) in which holmes fakes his death and worries watson out of his skull. by the time they went on the infamous hike across the swiss alps, watson shouldn't have trusted holmes one inch when it came to his mortality. but the doctor is of a forgiving and forgetting kind.
