burma's junta found another silly excuse

Posted by rita in culture is ordinary

because she had 'violated' the terms of her house arrest by letting someone in (IN not out!!!), the burmese junta found a perfect excuse to extend the duration that daw aung san suu kyi isn't allowed out her house. she now faces an extended arrest of another 18 months. they must be shitting bricks that once out she would win the elections. which are scheduled for next year. how jolly good then that she wanted to observe burmese hostility and opened hwe gate for a visitor (an american tourist who had swum onto her premises and is suffering from epileptic seizures and diabetes). because this makes as much sense as saying, 'you are hereby convicted of stealing from the government because you made a personal gift to a friend when you presented him with your own pair of shoes'.

more on daw aung san suu kyi's own web page.

random notes off the internet

news from burma are appearing now on an almost daily basis. which is a good thing because now the world will not look into the other direction so quickly again as it did after the monks' protests. however, it is still very much unlikely that the world community will bring about very much of a change these days because in order to help the tsunami victims, they have to act cushy around the junta. what a waste of human life.

edit: find a dossier from SPIEGELonline here. though the articles appear in german only, you still might find them quite illuminating on the subject of developments in burma over the past 18 years.

as you all know by now, a cyclone has hit burma very hard last weekend. 100,000 people are believed to have died in the natural desaster and according to official estimations by the UN there are many more to come if the military junta opens the countries borders soon.

this is an article in english by SPIEGELonline about the catastrophe that has hit the burmese population and how their political leaders do everything in their power to destroy their own people by looking the other way.

although not much has been heard fromand been reported of burma in the past two months, it doesn't mean things have gone back to normal again. the country is still oppressed by their military and still many democrats are being incarcerated, tortured and killed. most often we don't hear of that, for many people keep disappearing mysteriously on the streets. and where there is no body on display, no human rights court has a case to condone those dictatorial measures.

please, visit ko htike's blog to read up on the latest developments in burma.

the german blogger charming quark has compiled a helpful list of burmese bloggers. sadly, last night, the junta in burma has capped all internet connections. however, i am going to post the links anyway. the burmese bloggers need all the support they can get now. there are still some ways of leaking information although the situation for news coverage has become unbelievably difficult. the world continues to look towards burma and their fight for basic human rights and democracy.

random notes off the internet

finally! i've been waiting and waiting for days for the english translation of an article on SPIEGELonline. it's about the monks' fight against the military dictaroship in burma, or myanmar, as the country is known today. after long years of oppression, thousands of the holy men have started walking the streets of burma in protest against the dictators who turned the country to ruins.

"burma the beautiful" used to be the richest asian country by the end of the 19th century. the burmese were a literate and wealthy people, even those on the lower end of the social scale lived in relative comfort and security in comparison to their neighbours. this all was to change when the british empire sent king thebaw and queen supalayat into indian exile. in the following years, burma was stipred of its riches: precious stones as big as apples and entire forests of treak.

during WWII the country was ravished and lay in ruins after the war. instead of creating a democracy once the english had left the country, the military took over and expoilted their own people even further. today, burma lies in shambles. the opposition is hunted, jailed or killed. aung san suu kyi has not been able to set foot outside her home for ten years now.

last week, articles about the buddhist monks' open protests have started floating around SPIEGELonline. ever since then i have been impatiently waiting for their translation. well, here it is. BAREFOOT AGAINST THE JUNTA: Buddhist Monks Lead Myanmar Protests.

ps. if you have not done so yet, please, buy and read amitav gosh's the glass palace. he tells the story of an indian-burmese family from the first night of thebaw's exile to their contemporary lives in india.

edit: meanwhile, china shuns chancellor merkel, because she met with the dalai lama.
