in honour of today's storm, i composed an ode upon a brave pigeon digging its little claws into a trusty birch twig and swaying with the whole tree against the stiff breeze.

ode (in german), moving pigeon and music behind the cut.

charlie songs

in the 1910s, the chaplin-mania took off like a rocket. firmly and steadily, his fame soared to the sky. and strongly ignoring all sorts of copy-right and cashing in on the phenomenon, there were numerous songs composed in honour of the little fellow with the baggy pants. so, here are some examples of period adoration of a global phenomenon. harry potter had nothing on the tramp!

good music and...

andrea totally is to blame for it. and the beatles. of course. nobody forced them to make such good music. ok. and perhaps i have a hand in it, too. somewhere. remotely. anyway, listening to the white album, i couldn't help notice some similarities with two more recent songs. first there are the scissor sisters and then there is jet. and both probably have someone to blame, too.

you heard it here first

apparently the song 'smile' is currently experiencing a comeback. the tune was composed by chaplin in 1936 for his last silent film, modern times. it was a silent film in the sense of missing dialogue. as in theprevious feature, city lights, however, chaplin had included  sound on the filmstrips themselves. so in the end, technically speaking, the film was far from silent. there were a few words, such as human dialogue filtered through machines (telescreens, radio and a grammophone) and chaplin's tramp sung nonsensical lyrics to the smash-hit 'titine'. (the original lyrics were just as silly, though!) in 1936 'smile' was not yet the song, though, that now everybody has become wild about in the past three or four days, simply for the reason that it still lacked words. the lyrics were added somewhat later and ever since then, people have been messing up the line, 'light up your face with gladness / hide every trace of sadness'.

the simple things in life

so what are you to do when you are a mottley crew of teens, all dressed up and no place to go because the torrential rain is, well, torrential? instead of going to the party, you have the party come to you. just pull out your bass, drumkit, guitar and clarinette and play a hot, wild and steaming boogie out on the street under a tin roof. grab a girl and twirl away, singing and shouting. never mind the rain bubbling on the pavement three feet away from you.

this event took place yesterday evening, as i was on my way home and noticed a racey tune drifting towards me through the wet air. there was a dance party cooking underneath the small roof in front of the Blechbüchse and about 50 teens were swinging away to their hearts' full content. singing in the rain, indeed.

have you ever had the same experience when music takes on a distinct colour when you listen to it? for me, the uptempo beatles-songs are yellow to orange. brahms is located somewhere between blue and purple -- but happily melancholic shades of blue and purple. the counting crows are orangey-beige in my musical book. robbie williams is either blueish-yellow or purple. the soundtrack to kingdom of heaven is of a bright blueish hue, the shade of a late evening sky during the blue hour.

what are your musical colours?

is nothing sacred anymore?

whilst at home visiting my folks last weekend, i was whinging to my mum that i couldn't find a packet of räucherkerzchen here in leipzig that didn't cost me an arm and a leg. it appears like there is some sort of export/import tax placed on the goods as soon as they leave the erzgebirge to be shipped to those other exotic parts of germany, such as the northern part of saxony.

anywho,... mum did not want to have her erzgebirgische daughter suffer a horrendous pre-christmas season and provided her with a generous stack of 3 packets of crottendorfer räucherkerzchen. (KNOX incense sucks!). i was entirely content with the prospect of fumigate myself into oblivion and beyond -- until this morning when i recoiled in horror.

this morning on skype, the forum girls and i got into some sort of silly mood and we started bombarding each other with our parents' music. thus, let me present you with the three songs that were always playing on the radio until i was about 10 years old.

1) als ich fortging.

2) geh zu ihr.

3) am fenster.

4) wenn ein mensch lebt.

what's the soundtrack of your childhood?

just read a very nice article on a young pianist from venezuela, gabriela montero. please, check out her web page here. she also has a by-weekly audience-participation-programme running till the end of this year. visitors to the site will have the chance to request an improvisation on a tune of their personal choice. and gabriella will play it straight from her living room.
